About

I'm GW. I run this myself.

Local BJJ is one person. Me. I'm the one who answers your email, who pulls up to your house, who rolls out the mat, and who teaches your kid. There's no team behind the curtain and no franchise. When you book with me, you get me.

I'm a 4-stripe brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, currently training for my black belt at Phoenix JKD in Tempe under Master Shahram Moosavi, a 3rd-degree black belt. Master Moosavi received his black belt from Julio Cesar Pereira, an 8th-degree coral belt and the founder of GFTeam, one of the most accomplished competition teams in jiu-jitsu. That's my lineage. It's real, it's traceable, and it's the reason I can teach your kid the same technique that comes out of one of the top gyms in the sport.

Why in-home, one-on-one

I started doing this because I watched enough families sign kids up for group classes at strip-mall academies, drive 30 minutes each way, and get 8 minutes of coach time in a 60-minute class. That works for some kids. For a lot of kids, especially in the 10 to 16 range where they're either dialed in or bored, one-on-one is the difference between "I want to keep going" and "I'm done."

Private means I actually see what your kid is doing wrong and fix it in real time. It means I can push a kid who's ready and go slower with one who isn't. It means your kid learns the fundamentals correctly, from the beginning, without picking up bad habits copied from another beginner on the mat.

What I bring

A portable mat, focus mitts if we're working defense, and everything else needed. You provide a garage, a backyard, a cleared living room, whatever space works. I show up on time, I teach the hour, and I write up what we covered so you can see progress.

What I don't do

I don't teach kids under 10. Below that age BJJ is mostly rolling around, and it's not what I do well. I don't run group classes. I don't do adults. I don't push a subscription. If the first session doesn't fit, don't book another. It's on me to earn the second session.
